Stays in Fès

The station sits in the Ville Nouvelle, about 3 km from Fès el-Bali, and Fès-Saïss airport lies 12 km south of the city, according to ONDA, the airport operator. No Al Boraq high-speed train reaches Fès: from Tangier you ride it to Kénitra and change to a regular ONCF train east. Inside the medina, cars stop at the gates, and the lanes defeat any map app. I would only book a riad that sends someone to meet the taxi, and I would favour the Bab Boujloud and Batha side, where the drop-off is simple. Hotel Batha sits on that edge of the old city. The hills give you the view without the lanes. Hotel Sahrai, in Dhar el Mehraz, looks over the medina from outside the walls, but it is about ten minutes by car, not a walk. Les Mérinides, at Borj Nord beside the Marinid tombs, faces the old city from the north. The Ville Nouvelle, home to Fes Marriott Hotel Jnan Palace and Nour Plazza, suits travellers with a car or a late train. Fès el-Jdid, behind the Royal Palace, is a quieter medina than Fès el-Bali.

In Fès the real choice is between a riad inside Fès el-Bali, the walled medina, and a hotel outside it: on the hills that overlook the old city, or in the Ville Nouvelle, where the railway station is. For a first visit I would sleep in the medina, close to a gate a taxi can reach, such as Bab Boujloud. 15 of the 27 places to stay we list in Fès advertise a pool.

Riad Benkirane Fes Medina

Luxury family riad in Fes Medina with dining and terrace

Why guests love it

I would pick Riad Benkirane Fes Medina for a family stay inside the Fez medina. The listing gives air-conditioned family rooms with private bathrooms and free Wi-Fi, an on-site restaurant, a terrace and a balcony, near Batha Square. The tagline says luxury, but the listing shows one star, so I would judge it as a comfortable riad. A 9.9 rating comes from only 8 reviews, too few to lean on.

Hôtel Asswar Al Madina

Three-star Ville Nouvelle hotel about 500 m from Fès station and 3.5 km from the medina

Why guests love it

Asswar Al Madina is a practical family stopover rather than the base for a whole Fès stay. Arriving by train with children and luggage means a 500 m walk or a short taxi ride along Ville Nouvelle avenues, not a search for a riad door in medina lanes after dark. Rooms are air-conditioned, which matters in a Fès summer, and each has a private bathroom, a kettle and a TV. Breakfast covers continental, Italian and vegetarian options, useful with children who eat only a few things. What it lacks: no pool, no patio to play around, and every visit to Fès el-Bali starts with a taxi to the gates, about 3.5 km away. With children I would split the stay: one night here between trains, the rest in a riad inside the walls.

Hotel Sahrai

A 50-room Christophe Pillet hotel on the Dhar El Mehraz hill, with an infinity pool facing the Fes medina

Why guests love it

Sahrai has a separate children's pool next to the infinity pool, and that alone makes it easier with young children than a medina riad, where the patio basin is decorative and the stairs are steep. Babysitting is available, but beyond that the hotel offers little aimed at children and advertises no kids' club, so plan the days yourself. The hill is quiet at night, which suits early bedtimes. Every visit to the tanneries or the Bou Inania madrasa means a car ride of about 10 minutes, and the lanes of Fès el-Bali are no place for a pushchair, so bring a baby carrier. I would choose it for families with children old enough to enjoy the pool and to see the medina in half-day outings; parents of toddlers who expect organised activities will not find them here.

Fes Marriott Hotel Jnan Palace

Morocco's first Marriott-branded hotel: 244 rooms around gardens and an outdoor pool in the Fes Ville Nouvelle

Why guests love it

Families pick the Jnan Palace over a medina riad for one reason: an outdoor pool with room around it, in gardens where children can run, instead of a decorative patio basin and steep stairs. The pool is mixed and modest swimwear is accepted, which suits families who prefer to cover up. Rooms have balconies, and the wide pavements of the Ville Nouvelle are easier with a pushchair than the lanes of Fès el-Bali. No kids' club is advertised, so the days are yours to plan. The drawback is distance: every visit to the tanneries or the Bou Inania madrasa begins with a taxi of about ten minutes. Know too that Morocco World News reported in September 2025 a slide at the hotel: tired rooms in need of maintenance, uneven housekeeping and restaurants that have not kept pace, despite the new lobby. I would recommend it to families with young children who see the medina in half-day trips; teenagers keen on the souks in the evening will find the back and forth frustrating.

Hôtel Atlas Saiss Fès

Four-star Ville Nouvelle hotel on Avenue des FAR, a 15-minute walk from Fès station, with a spa and sauna

Why guests love it

The Atlas Saiss trades medina charm for space and simplicity. Rooms are listed at around 42 m² with air conditioning, family rooms are available, and the hotel sits on a wide avenue where a taxi can stop at the door, which is much easier with children and luggage than a riad reached on foot through Fès el-Bali. A restaurant and a coffee shop on site help on arrival evenings. The trade-off is distance: Bab Boujloud and the medina are about 5 km away, so every visit to the old city means a taxi each way. Listings disagree on whether there is an outdoor pool, so I would not plan a summer stay around one. I would book it for families arriving by train or car who want a calm base for two or three nights.

What to expect

  • Fès el-Bali is a car-free walled medina: the last stretch to any riad is on foot, which makes the choice of gate as important as the choice of riad.
  • The hills around the old city give two vantage points to sleep on: Dhar el Mehraz to the south-east and Borj Nord, by the Marinid tombs, to the north.
  • Fès el-Jdid, the 13th-century royal town behind the Royal Palace, is the calmer of the two medinas.
  • 15 of the 27 places to stay we list in Fès advertise a pool, several of them riads.

Local tips

  • ✓Book a riad that meets you at the taxi: in Fès el-Bali the lanes twist and dead-end without useful signs, and map apps are unreliable between high walls.
  • ✓Arriving from Tangier, take Al Boraq only as far as Kénitra and change there: no high-speed train runs to Fès.
  • ✓Decline offers to guide you to your riad from strangers at Bab Boujloud: your riad's own staff will know your name and the house.
  • ✓If you want the panorama, choose between Dhar el Mehraz and Borj Nord: both look over the medina, but neither lets you walk to the souks at night.
  • ✓In winter, ask whether the room is heated: riads built around an open patio stay cold and damp from December to February.
  • ✓Alcohol is served only in licensed places; if a drink with dinner matters, ask the riad before booking whether it holds a licence.
  • ✓The Fès Festival of World Sacred Music fills the riads around its dates: in 2026 it ran from 4 to 7 June, opening at Bab Makina. If your trip overlaps next year's edition, book your riad as soon as the dates are announced.

…

Frequently asked

Is it better to stay in the medina or the Ville Nouvelle in Fès?

For a first visit, the medina: you walk out of your riad into Fès el-Bali and can return at midday when the heat or the crowds get too much. The Ville Nouvelle is the better base if you drive, arrive on a late train or want a large hotel pool, but the medina is then a taxi ride away each time.

How do I get to my riad in Fès el-Bali?

By taxi to the nearest gate, then on foot. Cars cannot enter the old city, so ask your riad which gate to give the driver and whether someone will meet you there. Bab Boujloud and the Batha side are the simplest drop-off points for riads on the western edge of the medina.

How far is Fès airport and the train station from the medina?

The railway station is in the Ville Nouvelle, about 3 km from Fès el-Bali. Fès-Saïss airport lies 12 km south of the city, according to ONDA, the airport operator; from there, the taxi ride to a medina gate adds the crossing of the Ville Nouvelle.

Which hotels in Fès have a pool?

Fifteen of the twenty-seven advertise one: Hôtel Atlas Saiss, which has an outdoor pool, and Fes Heritage Boutique Luxury Hotel, Riad Citronnier & Spa, Riad Marjana, Palais Faraj, Dar Lys, Hotel Sahrai, Menzeh Zalagh 2 Boutique Hôtel & Sky, Menzeh Zalagh City Center, Palais Ommeyad, Across Hotels & Spa, Nour Plazza, Hotel Batha, Fes Marriott Hotel Jnan Palace, Les Mérinides. If a swim matters in July or August, check whether the pool is a full pool or a small plunge pool in a riad patio: several of these are riads where the pool sits in the courtyard.

Which places to stay in Fès without a pool have the best ratings?

Riad Ruh Fes and Riad Fes Maya both score 9.3, Riad Serendipity 9.1, and Riad Fes Bab Rcif, Riad Dar Jeanne and TheHive Residence 9.0; Riad Benkirane shows 9.9 but on only 8 reviews. Riad Lalj (8.9), Hôtel Asswar Al Madina and Hôtel Kairouan (8.6), Dar Atlantic (8.5) and Aparthotel Les Oliviers (7.9) complete the list; Les Oliviers has a spa and sauna but no pool.

Can I take Al Boraq to Fès?

No. The high-speed line runs from Tangier to Kénitra, Rabat and Casablanca. From Tangier, ride Al Boraq to Kénitra and change to a regular ONCF train heading east to Fès.

What changes in Fès during Ramadan, and how should I dress in the medina?

Ramadan 2027 is expected to begin around 8 February, the exact date being set by the sighting of the moon. By day, many cafés and food stalls in the medina stay shut until the ftour at sunset, and the lanes fill again after dark. In Fès el-Bali, covering shoulders and knees draws less attention, and the mosques, including the Qaraouiyine, are closed to non-Muslims.
