Hôtel Asswar Al Madina
Three-star Ville Nouvelle hotel about 500 m from Fès station and 3.5 km from the medina

About this stay
Asswar Al Madina works as a station hotel. Fès railway station, about 500 m away, has direct ONCF trains to Marrakech (about six and a half hours), Tangier and Oujda, and Meknès is under 40 minutes down the line. From Fès-Saïss Airport, about 13 km out, taxis wait at the terminal exit and bus 16 runs to the train station. The red petits taxis outside the station run on the meter; for Fès el-Bali, most drop visitors at Bab Boujloud, and Batha Square is about 3.5 km from the hotel.
Rooms are air-conditioned and have a private bathroom, a desk, a kettle and a TV. Breakfast in the coffee shop covers continental, Italian and vegetarian choices. There is no patio, no rooftop over the old city and no pool: this is a Ville Nouvelle address on wide avenues, not a riad inside the walls. For travellers who want to sleep in the medina, I would keep this hotel for the first or last night of the stay only.

Our take
Despite a name that means the city walls, Asswar Al Madina is nowhere near the ramparts: it stands in the Ville Nouvelle about 500 metres from Fès railway station, and Batha Square, at the edge of Fès el-Bali, is some 3.5 km away. Read it as a station hotel and it makes sense. Guests rate it 8.6 out of 10 over 500 reviews, ahead of Hotel Batha (8.2), the other three-star city hotel on this site with hundreds of reviews. Rooms are air-conditioned, with a kettle and a TV; there is no patio, no rooftop over the old city and no pool. I would book it around an ONCF train, not for travellers who want to wake up inside the medina.
- The red petits taxis outside the station run on the meter: ask for le compteur before the car moves, and say Bab Boujloud if you are heading into Fès el-Bali, since no car enters the medina.
- Meet a guide or a dinner host at Bab Boujloud rather than at a pin on a map app: GPS loses its way in the derbs, and Bab Boujloud is the gate where most taxis from the Ville Nouvelle stop.
- Leaving by coach? CTM runs from its own station in the Ville Nouvelle, while the gare routière sits by Bab Boujloud on the north side of the medina, so tell the driver which one you need.
- From the station, direct ONCF trains run to Marrakech in about six and a half hours, as well as to Tangier and Oujda, and Meknès is under 40 minutes away: a day trip there can continue by grand taxi to Moulay Idriss and Volubilis.
- Flying into Fès-Saïss Airport, about 13 km from the city? Taxis wait at the terminal exit, and bus 16 runs to the train station, a 500 m walk from the hotel.
Why we love it
- About 500 m from Fès railway station, an easy walk with luggage
- Rated above Hotel Batha, the site's other three-star Fès city hotel with hundreds of reviews
- Breakfast with vegetarian, Italian and continental options
- Air-conditioned rooms with a desk, a kettle and a TV
Why guests love itAsswar Al Madina is a practical family stopover rather than the base for a whole Fès stay. Arriving by train with children and luggage means a 500 m walk or a short taxi ride along Ville Nouvelle avenues, not a search for a riad door in medina lanes after dark. Rooms are air-conditioned, which matters in a Fès summer, and each has a private bathroom, a kettle and a TV. Breakfast covers continental, Italian and vegetarian options, useful with children who eat only a few things. What it lacks: no pool, no patio to play around, and every visit to Fès el-Bali starts with a taxi to the gates, about 3.5 km away. With children I would split the stay: one night here between trains, the rest in a riad inside the walls.
