Our take
Asswar Al Madina sits in the Ville Nouvelle about 500 metres from Fès railway station, close enough to walk over with a suitcase after a late ONCF train. Guests score it 8.6 out of 10 across 500 reviews, a strong result for a three-star. It is a city hotel with air-conditioned rooms, a kettle and a TV, not a riad: no patio, no rooftop over the medina, none of the alleys of Fès el-Bali outside the door. I would book it for a first or last night between trains, or as a quiet base for travellers who prefer to see the old city by day and sleep on wide, taxi-friendly streets. The medina gates are around 3.5 km away, too far to walk with luggage.
- Red petits taxis wait outside Fès station: ask for the meter (le compteur) before the car moves, and name Bab Boujloud as your drop-off if you are heading into Fès el-Bali.
- No taxi enters the medina; drivers stop at the gates. If you are meeting a guide or booking dinner inside the walls, agree on Bab Boujloud as the meeting point instead of trusting a map app in the derbs.
- Moving on by coach? CTM departs from its own office in the Ville Nouvelle, not from the long-distance bus station beside the medina walls, so say CTM to the taxi driver.
- Breakfast is served in the hotel coffee shop with continental, Italian, vegetarian and halal choices, which settles the first meal before an early train without hunting for a café.
Why we love it
- Air-conditioned rooms with private bathrooms
- Wide variety of breakfast options available
- Conveniently located near Fes Railway Station
- Tea and coffee makers in every room
Why guests love itWith Fès station about 500 metres away, Asswar Al Madina works for families as a practical stopover rather than the heart of a Fès stay: arriving by train with children and bags means a short walk or taxi ride on Ville Nouvelle avenues, not a search through medina lanes after dark. Rooms are air-conditioned, which counts in Fès in July and August, and each has a private bathroom, a kettle and a TV. Breakfast covers continental, Italian, vegetarian and halal options, so children with fixed tastes have choices. What it lacks: no pool appears among its facilities, and every visit to Fès el-Bali starts with a taxi to the gates. If your children want to sleep around a patio, I would split the stay: one night here between trains, the rest in a riad inside the walls.
