About this stay

Esmeralda answers a problem specific to Chefchaouen: the blue medina is a maze of stepped, car-free lanes on the slope of the Rif, and most of its riads have no pool and nowhere to leave a car. Here you park for free at the hotel and walk about 10 minutes to Bab el Ain, the main gate, or to Plaza Outa el-Hammam, where the Kasbah museum and the Great Mosque stand. The 25 rooms each have a private shower room; family rooms add air-conditioning and a balcony. Breakfast is a buffet from 7:30 to 10:30, early enough for a day trip to the Akchour waterfalls, about 30 to 45 minutes away by road. Booking also lists a heated pool, a hot tub and a sauna, which Expedia and Hotels.com do not mention, so I treat the outdoor pool as the certainty and the rest as unconfirmed. Breakfast is the only meal listed on site; for dinner, the nearest option listed is Oum Rabie, a grill and bar on Avenue Hassan II, one of the few places in town that serve alcohol.

  • Outdoor pool, rare among Chefchaouen hotels
  • Free on-site parking in a town whose medina is closed to cars
  • 25 rooms; family rooms with air-conditioning and a balcony
  • About 10 minutes on foot to Bab el Ain, Plaza Mohammed V and Plaza Outa el-Hammam
  • Buffet breakfast from 7:30 to 10:30, free WiFi
  • Rated 8.8 out of 10 on 26 reviews

Our take

Esmeralda has an outdoor pool, which few hotels in Chefchaouen offer, and a rarer asset still for drivers: free parking on site. Its 25 rooms are about a 10-minute walk from Plaza Mohammed V and Bab el Ain, the main gate of the blue medina, so you reach the old town on foot without hauling bags up its stepped lanes. Family rooms are air-conditioned with balconies, and breakfast runs from 7:30 to 10:30. I would book it for a road trip through the Rif, or for children who need a swim after a morning in the medina. I would not book it for riad atmosphere: it is a modern hotel, and its 8.8 out of 10 rests on just 26 reviews.

  • Arriving by bus, you land at the gare routière at the far end of Avenue Mohammed V, about 1.5 km from the medina and uphill most of the way; take one of the petits taxis waiting at the station rather than walking with luggage.
  • With your own car, the hotel car park makes a good base for the Akchour waterfalls in the Rif, 30 to 45 minutes away by road; without one, shared grand taxis leave from Avenue Hassan II as soon as they are full.
  • Only Booking lists a heated pool, a hot tub and a sauna, while Expedia and Hotels.com describe the outdoor pool alone; if a steam bath matters to you, plan on a hammam in the medina instead.
  • Chefchaouen sits at around 600 m and winter is its wettest season, with nights close to 5°C, so count on the outdoor pool from late spring to early autumn; listings mention air-conditioning but no heating, so get heating confirmed in writing for a winter stay.
  • For the classic view over the blue town, walk through the medina to Ras el-Maa, the spring just outside the eastern walls, then climb the hill to the Spanish Mosque, built in the 1920s.

Why we love it

  • An outdoor pool, which few hotels in Chefchaouen have
  • Free parking on site, rare in a town whose medina is closed to cars
  • About 10 minutes on foot to Bab el Ain and Plaza Outa el-Hammam
Why guests love it

Chefchaouen is a hard town for families with small children: the charm lies in steep, stepped lanes where pushchairs are useless, and most riads have narrow stairs and no pool. Esmeralda solves several of those problems at once. You unload the car at the door and park for free, the outdoor pool gives children a break between walks, and the family rooms have air-conditioning and a balcony. Plaza Outa el-Hammam, with the Kasbah museum and its garden, is about 10 minutes away on foot, a manageable return trip for young legs. Breakfast starts at 7:30, which helps with early starts to the Akchour waterfalls. The limits are real: 26 reviews make a thin record, the pool is outdoors and cold outside the warm months, and you will not get the patio-and-fountain setting of a medina house. For a family arriving by car between May and October, I would choose it over a riad.
